Steven L. Abrams is the executive director of the South Florida Regional Transportation Authority. SFRTA was created by state law to operate Tri-Rail and provide for the future mobility needs of the region’s millions of residents and visitors.

Abrams believes in public transit because he is a product of public transit. Steven grew up in downtown Philadelphia, where he rode buses and trains from an early age. He has been a regular Tri-Rail rider for ten years and counting. Steven’s path to Tri-Rail traces back to a summer job he held as a 17 year-old at Conrail. Conrail merged with CSX onto the famed Seaboard System. Tri-Rail runs on the original tracks, and Abrams now oversees this corridor four decades later.

Abrams’ thirty-year public service career has spanned the top levels of city, county, and regional government. First elected to the Boca Raton city council in 1989, Abrams was subsequently elected to three terms as mayor. He then served for nearly a decade as a Palm Beach County Commissioner and as the first mayor of Palm Beach County. Abrams also sat for eight years on the SFRTA governing board, including three terms as chairman.

As mayor of Boca Raton, Abrams gained national exposure and local respect during the first bioterrorist attack in American history when anthrax was discovered at the AMI building in the aftermath of 9/11. Abrams received the Distinguished Service Medal from the Israel National Police for his leadership during the ordeal. He testified on national television on the government’s response at the invitation of a United States Senate subcommittee.

Abrams is a member of the Florida and District of Columbia Bars and practiced law in Boca Raton for twenty-five years. Prior to moving to Florida, Abrams served in the White House as law clerk to the Counsel to President Reagan and current Chief Justice of the United States John G. Roberts, Jr.

Abrams is a graduate of Harvard University, where he received the Philo Sherman Bennett Prize for the best government senior thesis and was graduated magna cum laude in 1980. He received his law degree from The George Washington University in 1985. In 2005, Everglades University awarded Abrams an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters. He and his wife Debbie have been married for 36 years and have two grown children.
